Rickets

Rickets is defined as failure of mineralisation of growing bone or osteoid tissue. Rickets is a metabolic disturbance of home growth and results from dietary lack of vitamin D or ultraviolet rays of sunlight.

Causes of rickets:

Vitamin D disorders

  • Nutritional vitamin D deficiency
  • Congenital vitamin D deficiency
  • Secondary vitamin D deficiency
  • Malabsorption
  • Increased degradation
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Vitamin D dependent rickets

Calcium deficiency

  • Low calcium intake
  • Diet deficient in calcium
  • Premature infants
  • Malabsorption
  • Dietary inhibitors of calcium absorption

Phosphorus deficiency

  • Inadequate intake
  • Premature infants
