Keratoconjuctivitis sicca

Also known as dry eye;is a clinical condition where aqueous tear production is insufficient to maintain normal tear film.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of dry eye are,

  • Irritation
  • Photophobia
  • Burning
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Presence of stringy mucous discharge
  • Transient blurring of vision
  • Pain worse with blinking due to development of corneal epithelial filaments

Dry eyes are caused by lack of adequate tears.Your eyes are a complex mixture of water,fatty oil and mucus.This mixture helps to maintain surface of eyes smooth and clear,preventing it from any infection.

Complications:

  • Eye infections
  • Damage to surface of your eyes
  • Decrease quality of life

Treatment:

  • Artificial tears are the mainstay of treatment for mild to moderate keratoconjunctivitis sicca
  • Reduction of tear drainage by occlusion of puncti
  • Mucolytic agents
