Mooren’s ulcer

It is chronic peripheral corneal ulcer.It is an autoimmune disease causing vasculitis of limbal vessels resulting into ischaemic necrosis that produces enzymes such as collagenase and proteoglyconase,which play role in the causation of ulceration.

Types:

Limited form:It is often unilateral ,relatively benign, occurring in older patients.

Progressive form:It is often bilateral, relatively progressive, occurring in young patients.

Symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Photophobia
  • Red eye
  • Decreases vision

Signs:

  • Begins as an excavating ulceration, at the periphery of cornea,near the limbus.
  • Progresses by undermining the corneal epithelium and superficial corneal lamella.
  • Perforation is rare.
  • Sclera remains uninvolved.
