Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis more aptly called otospongiosis,is a primary disease of the bony labyrinth.It is spongy growth which takes place in one of the three bones of middle ear,mostly stapes.

Types:

  • Stapedial otosclerosis causes stapes fixation and conductive deafness
  • Cochlear otosclerosis involves region of round window or other areas in otic capsule and may cause sensorineural hearing loss
  • Histologic otosclerosis remains asymptomatic

Symptoms:

  • Hearing loss
  • Paracusis willisii
  • Tinnitus is mostly seen in cochlear otosclerosis
  • Vertigo
  • Speech is monotonous, well-modulated and soft
