Otosclerosis more aptly called otospongiosis,is a primary disease of the bony labyrinth.It is spongy growth which takes place in one of the three bones of middle ear,mostly stapes.
Types:
- Stapedial otosclerosis causes stapes fixation and conductive deafness
- Cochlear otosclerosis involves region of round window or other areas in otic capsule and may cause sensorineural hearing loss
- Histologic otosclerosis remains asymptomatic
Symptoms:
- Hearing loss
- Paracusis willisii
- Tinnitus is mostly seen in cochlear otosclerosis
- Vertigo
- Speech is monotonous, well-modulated and soft
