Macular hole is a small hole in macula located in eye’s light sensitive tissue called the retina.Macula provides sharp central vision we need for reading,driving,seeing fine details.
Macular holes can occur due to;
- Vitreous shrinkage
- Diabetic eye disease
- Myopia
- Macular punker
- Detached retina
- Eye injury
- Best’s disease(an inherited condition causing macular damage)
Shrinkage of vitreous humour or separation of retina:
The back of eye is filled with thick gel like material called vitreous humour.The clear vitreous shrinks and become more liquid with aging.
Sometimes the shrinkage can tear off a small piece of retina,causing a hole.If this missing piece is in macula,it is called as macular hole.
