Vasomotor rhinitis

Vasomotor rhinitis is characterised by a group of symptoms such as sneezing,itchiness, and runny nose that are caused by irritation and congestion of nose.

It is brought about by change in vascular tone and permeability. The balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system is disturbed. Autonomic nervous system becomes hyperactive which leads to congestion of nose and hypertrophy of turbinates.

Sign and symptoms:

  • Paroxysmal sneezing
  • Postnasal drip
  • Excessive rhinorrhea
  • Nasal obstruction
  • nasal membrane swelling
  • Red nasal mucosa
  • Hypertrophy of turbinates

Causes

  1. Irritation of nasal mucosa
  2. Change in temperature
  3. Stress
  4. Humidity

Complications

  • Sinusitis
  • Deviated nasal Septum
  • Nasal polyps
