Aphakia

Aphakia is the absence of lens in the eye.In the absence of lens,there is no focussing and adjustment.

Causes of aphakia:

  • Removal of kens:by surgery is the most common cause
  • Absorption of lens matter:trauma perforating injury causes rupture of the anterior capsule with subsequent absorption of lens matter
  • Hypermature cataract; very rarely,all the lens matter us absorbed and the capsule is left behind.

Signs of aphakia

  • Limbus may show linear scar,sutures or suture marks
  • Anterior chamber is deep
  • Iris shows tremendous called iridodonesis
  • Pupil appears jet black in colour
  • Retinoscopy shows high hypermaetropia
