Aphakia is the absence of lens in the eye.In the absence of lens,there is no focussing and adjustment.
Causes of aphakia:
- Removal of kens:by surgery is the most common cause
- Absorption of lens matter:trauma perforating injury causes rupture of the anterior capsule with subsequent absorption of lens matter
- Hypermature cataract; very rarely,all the lens matter us absorbed and the capsule is left behind.
Signs of aphakia
- Limbus may show linear scar,sutures or suture marks
- Anterior chamber is deep
- Iris shows tremendous called iridodonesis
- Pupil appears jet black in colour
- Retinoscopy shows high hypermaetropia
