Nasal septal haematoma

The collection of blood under the perichondrium or periosteum of nasal septum is termed as septal haematoma.

Causes:

It often results from ;

  • Nasal trauma
  • Septal surgery
  • Bleeding Disorders

Clinical Features:

  • Bilateral nasal obstruction
  • Frontal headache
  • Pressure over the nasal bridge
  • Examination reveals smooth rounded swelling of the septum in both the nasal fossae

Treatment:

Small haematomas can be aspirated withb a wide bore sterile meddle.Large haematomas are incised and drained by a small anteroposterior incision parallel to the nasal floor.Systemic antibiotic should be taken.
