Hemangioma

Hemangiomas are tumors (Benign tumor or Hamartoma) composed of blood-filled vessels.

Hemangiomas are very common tumors, especially in infancy and childhood; most are present from birth and initially increase in size, but many eventually regress spontaneously.

While hemangiomas typically are localized lesions confined to the head and neck; they occasionally may be more extensive (angiomatosis) and can arise internally. Nearly one third of these internal lesions are found in the liver.

Types of Hemangioma :

Amongst the various clinical and histologic variants, important forms are described below :-

  • Capillary hemangioma,
  • Cavernous hemangioma,
  • Pyogenic granulomas (Haemangioma of granulation tissue type)
  • and Juvenile hemangiomas (Strawberry hemangiomas).

Treatment:

Hemangiomas usually fade gradually over time, and most do not require treatment. Therapeutic options can have side effects and are avoided if possible. However, hemangiomas that may be disfiguring or that are located at sites that can cause impairment (eyelids, airway) are often treated, typically with pharmacotherapy first. Management options may include the following;

  • Beta blockers
  • Corticosteroids
  • Laser surgery
