Gas gangrene

Gas gangrene ,also known as myonecrosis or necrotizing fascitis,is mostly caused by Clostridium perfringens.

Clinical findings:

The clinical findings are as follows,

  • Pain
  • Edema
  • Cellulitis
  • Necrosis
  • Creptius is palpated in affected tissue
  • Hemolysis and jaundice are common
  • Shock and death can occur  

Treatment:

Treatment mostly includes excision and antibiotic is given. Penicillin G is the antibiotic of choice.
